Writing Spirited Simplicity

by Marie Tan-Hancock

Writing was never my career, I am not born to write, though I had the desire, it was not my dream either to write a book. Not until twelve years ago did I make up my mind to give it a shot.

Usually it takes me a year or two to finish one tiny book. I have to dig in really deep, reminiscing my past experiences. They may be bad or good, but I always include them as some of the most honest attributes in my books. Experiences are worth sharing, because they made me who I am today. I write manuscripts on various subjects about psycho-spiritual healing. God has given me the blessing to possess a heart that is dedicated to this purpose. Most important of all are my never ending prayers of faith, hope and love of what I do.

When writing "spirited simplicity" I was amazed at how quickly I finished it. Truthfully, I didn't even know how I put this tiny book together so quickly, compared to time taken on my other books. Each book I've written has been relied on an individual and different process of experiences and inspiration. In "spirited simplicity," the conception was about living it and knowing how impactful and meaningful a simple and God-centered lifestyle can bring true healing in our lives.

A friend in church who is presently facing a very stressful situation in her life told me that Bob, another friend (not his real name) told her to "just read it (spirited simplicity)." Bob is one of these strangers from church that I gave my books with no charge. Like a few others, after reading the books, they reordered copies to give away. I was later surprised and yet honored when someone told me that Bob was a former NFL professional football player, and retired hall of famer back in the 70s.  Bob described the books as "very good and beautifully written." He told me that he really likes my books. Being a rookie writer, I am grateful for Bob's words of support and encouragement. They are very encouraging and motivating statements from someone who has reached the heights of world sports and, as we speak, is now a practicing Catholic and daily mass attendee. He married his childhood sweetheart, and to date, they were married for over 50 years and counting. Bob and his wife are blessed with six children and 14 grandchildren together.

Readers like him help boost my energy as an amateur self published author like me. So far, he has read two books, Healing the family and the Spirited simplicity.

After I released my fifth tiny book,  "spirited simplicity," I was very excited to send printed copies by mail to a few close friends whom I knew personally, to new ones that I had met on line, and to some old fiends that I have not heard from since childhood. I also handed books to parishioners in the churches that I often attend. I am overwhelmed and very thankful for their support. I was very thankful that, out of roughly 25 people who got the books by mail, three that I have never met in person reordered to gift to their friends and family generously giving their donations, time, and efforts to help me print more books. Today, these previously unfamiliar people, some who appreciated the tiny book have extended their cheery words of involuntary reinforcement and given me simple yet beautiful presents are now my new found friends that I consider part of my family in Christ. They added to my list of inspirations, and I really could not thank them enough.

Being a self-published author is also sometimes a one woman campaign. I consider myself a self-starter and self made. In writing spiritual books, I know there is an unseen someone who guides me in every step of the way. My philosophy and personality go hand in hand. Every time I write, I give my all. I want my purpose to be out there touching people from all walks of life.

Whatever purpose you're inspired to do; just fill it with love - so much love that nothing and no one can deflect you from the plan God has prepared for you. Let us make new friends and family through God, with God, for God, in God. His beautiful love will pull us through in everything we do for His greater honor, purpose, and glory.
